Solar plant creates safe environment for children

A solar farm in De Wildt has stepped in to transform a needy day care centre near Brits, into an inviting and safe environment for young children.

“Boitumelo Day Care Center in Mothutlung has been transformed to create a nurturing environment for young children to thrive. Quality early childhood development begins with safe, functional and stimulating learning environments. Yet many Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in underserved communities continue to face infrastructure challenges that limit their ability to provide quality care and education,” said Marinda le Roux of De Wildt Solar.

De Wildt Solar has responded to this need through the upgrade of Boitumelo Day Care Centre, creating a secure space where 30 young children can learn and play.

These improvements position the care centre to meet the compliance requirements of both the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Social Development, a critical step towards accessing operational grant funding currently unavailable to the centre due to its registration status.

“What was once just a dream has become a safe, beautiful, and inspiring place where our children can learn, grow, and thrive. We are grateful for the support that has made this transformation possible and for the investment it represents in the future of every child who walks through our doors,” said Betty Motlhosi. principal at Boitumelo Day Care Centre.

The completed facility includes a 12-metre container subdivided into two classrooms, a 6-metre container classroom, and a 6-metre service container housing an office, kitchen, and sickbay.

All units feature secure entrances and burglar-proofed windows. A fully serviced ablution facility with four child-appropriate toilets and two for educators, connected to the main waterborne sewer system, was also installed.

The centre has further benefited from shaded outdoor areas, a prepared play area and a fully enclosed perimeter secured with galvanised mesh fencing, alongside controlled pedestrian and vehicular access points.

Boitumelo Day Care Centre was identified for this targeted infrastructure support as part of the solar plant’s broader ECD programme.

“Investing in early childhood development means investing in the foundations on which children’s futures are built. At De Wildt Solar, we recognise that quality learning and care require more than educational resources. Children need safe, functional and nurturing spaces in which they can develop.,” said Qinisani

The next phase of support will focus on facilitating the centre’s formal registration with the relevant government departments.
