The first Street Store in Hartbeespoort was held on 26 May 2018. What started as a simple initiative to provide free clothing and food to those in need has since grown into a movement focused on restoring dignity, spreading kindness, and uplifting vulnerable members of the community.
Street Store forms part of a worldwide movement that provides clothing and essential items free of charge to people in need. Locally, the initiative has impacted more than 12,000 underprivileged people over the past eight years, including many children.
“The event is about far more than just providing clothing and food. Street Store is about restoring dignity. It is about looking another human being in the eyes and saying: ‘You are seen. You are valued. You are loved,’” organisers said.
“What makes this day so beautiful is seeing people from all walks of life come together — churches, schools, businesses, farmers, families, adults, and children — all joining hands across cultural and social boundaries to serve others with compassion and unity.”
One of the main focuses of this year’s event is the Toy Drive Initiative, aimed at ensuring that every child attending the Street Store receives a toy or book of their own.
“For many children, it will be the first time they receive such a gift. The joy on their faces when they walk into the toy station is impossible to describe.
Organisers described the joy and excitement children experience at the toy station as one of the most emotional and rewarding parts of the day.
Community members are encouraged to donate new or pre-loved toys and books, volunteer their time, or contribute in any way possible.
The event continues to bring together churches, schools, businesses, farmers, families, and volunteers from across Hartbeespoort, all working together to support those in need.
