Brits toddler fights for his life after near-drowning

One-year-old Daniël Janse van Rensburg from Brits is fighting for his life in a Johannesburg hospital after falling into his grandparents’ swimming pool two weeks ago.

Daniël has since been placed on a ventilator and remains in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Mediclinic Sandton.

According to his father, Christiaan, the family was visiting the grandparents in Brits on 17 April when the incident occurred. “We were all inside the house with the doors closed. Daniël was playing with his sisters. We don’t know how it happened, but he managed to get outside and fell into the pool,” Christiaan said.

“When I got him out of the pool, he was not breathing. He was not with us. My father started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and continued in the car while we raced to the hospital, where doctors took over and managed to bring him back. If it was not for my father…”

Daniël was later transferred to Mediclinic Sandton for specialised care.

“He is in a stable condition. He moves his little hands and feet, and his doctor told us this week that brain scans showed no brain damage. We praise God. This is a miracle. Daniël was not alive when I took him out of the swimming pool.”

Christiaan said Daniël’s sedation is slowly being reduced, and the family is hopeful for his recovery. “He is doing well, and his doctor is positive. We are so looking forward to seeing those little brown eyes again — but all in the Lord’s time.”

A BackaBuddy campaign has been launched to assist the family with medical expenses during Daniël’s recovery.

“We want to thank everyone for their support, and also thank Protea Hotel, which learned of our situation and offered to accommodate us close to the hospital, where we spend most of our time. We are deeply grateful,” Christiaan said.
