According to police spokesperson Constable Ben Moabi, the man was fleeing from security officers before 07:00 on Tuesday when he fell into the sewage manhole at the corner of Vlei Avenue and Carel de Wet Street in Brits.
Police, Madibeng Fire, and other emergency services were on the scene soon after trying to locate the man, who had disappeared into the manhole.
According to information at the scene, the Madibeng Local Municipality attempted to pump sewage from the manhole, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
