The graceful pair, Bubbles and Luna, are much-loved residents of Pecanwood’s waterways. However, two weeks ago, the adventurous duo wandered off and made their way to the “greener pastures” of Hartbeespoort Dam.
“We immediately knew they were missing. I feed them every morning and when they did not appear for lunch, we knew something was wrong,” said Gail Houareau, a resident of Pecanwood Estate.
A “Missing Swan” alert was circulated and residents across the area kept a lookout for the wandering pair. Nearby estates later alerted Pecanwood that the swans had been spotted on the dam.
“The estate was very concerned about the swans’ safety on the dam and immediately contacted the Owl Rescue Centre,” Houareau said.
Brendan Murray of the Owl Rescue Centre rushed to the rescue in his kayak. “It took three attempts, with the help of residents in kayaks, to finally catch up with the pair on Monday. They were safely caught and returned to their dam in the estate,” Murray said.
Pecanwood Environmental director, Beatrix van der Spuy, said the estate was extremely grateful to have the swans safely back home. “We value the welfare of our swans and would like to thank the Owl Rescue Centre and our residents for rescuing Bubbles and Luna,” she said.
