Emergency team battles for hours to free crash victims

Emergency workers spent more than two hours rescuing three seriously injured people trapped in the wreckage after two trucks and a taxi collided near Brits on Monday night.

The impact was so severe that the taxi ended up on top of the trucks.

According to Leandre Spies, spokesperson for Hartbeespoort Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), the crash occurred at a stop-and-go point on the R511 north of Brits at around 22:00. Two trucks and a taxi towing a trailer were involved in the collision.

“Our emergency workers had an extremely difficult task to free the three occupants of the taxi. They had to work on top of the trucks,” said Spies.

Following a rescue operation that lasted more than two hours, emergency workers successfully freed all three occupants from the wreckage. The victims sustained serious injuries and were stabilised at the scene before being transported to a hospital in Brits for further medical treatment.

Emergency workers battled for hours to free the occupants of the taxi.

“It is miraculous that there were no fatalities. Both truck drivers were unharmed. Our emergency workers said they had never seen a scene like this one,” Spies said.
