Hartbeespoort motorcyclist dies in fatal crash

A Hartbeespoort resident was killed in a tragic motorcycle crash at Silkaatsnek on Wednesday afternoon.

Well-known motorcyclist Ryno van der Merwe (38) died on impact when his motorcycle collided with a bakkie near the R511/R513 junction shortly before 17:00.

“Ryno was on his way home from work at a mine near Brits when a bakkie made a U-turn and crashed into him,” his wife, Joanne, said. “Our lives fell apart at that moment.”

Van der Merwe, a father of two daughters aged 14 and 10, was returning home from work when the accident occurred. He was declared dead at the scene by Hartbeespoort Emergency Medical Services (HEMS).

“Ryno lived for us and taught our daughters they could be anything as long as they believe in themselves. He was much loved by so many people. He was a fun-loving person and a passionate motorcyclist. He rode his bike every day,” Joanne said.

She said the family was overwhelmed by the support they have received following the tragedy.
“We want to thank the Crusaders Motorcycle Club for their support, and all the friends and family who are carrying us through this difficult time.”

The circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated.
