A 62-year-old man was arrested, while police seized raw materials, chemicals, drug-manufacturing equipment, tools and a final product believed to be “Cat”.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Anne Magakoe, police received information from members of the community about suspicious activities and a strong, unpleasant smell coming from the farm in Klipvoorstad.
“Members of the Brits Crime Intelligence, Brits Trio Task Team and Jericho Visible Policing responded to the information and proceeded to the identified farm. Upon their arrival, police spotted a white Mahindra bakkie at the entrance to the property. Three men fled into the surrounding bushes upon noticing the approaching police vehicles,” she said.
The driver of the Mahindra bakkie was stopped and identified himself as the owner of the property. Police requested permission to enter and search the premises, which was granted.
“While searching the property, members detected a strong chemical smell and discovered equipment and materials suspected to have been used in the manufacturing of drugs. A tactical operation was immediately initiated.”
Members of the Hartbeespoort K9 Unit and the police drone unit subsequently joined the operation and searched for the three men who had fled. Despite an extensive search, they managed to evade arrest.
The 62-year-old man, who is believed to be linked to activities at the premises, was arrested.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams was at the scene on Wednesday night and said the expensive equipment found at the suspected drug laboratory suggested that the person funding the operation was “someone with very deep pockets”.
“There is also a clear indication that the operation was in the process of being extended,” he said.
“We commend the members of the community for their vigilance and willingness to work with the police. The fight against drugs requires a collective effort, and information provided by communities remains crucial in ensuring that those involved in criminal activities are brought to justice.”
Police are continuing with their investigation to trace the outstanding suspects.
The 62-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 4 September 2026.
The case has been handed over to the Hawks for further investigation.
