Makola Water and Environmental has been appointed to review the RMP and develop a business plan for Hartbeespoort Dam.
“The RMP aims to manage the utilisation of water resources and the surrounding environment in ways that promote community participation and beneficiation, environmental sustainability, and unlock the socio-economic potential of the water resource for recreational use,” Magalies Water said.
According to Magalies Water, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has identified several factors that have driven the need to compile resource management plans.
These include, among others, invasive alien species, water quality challenges, conflict between water users due to a lack of management tools, public safety concerns, uncontrolled development within the dam basin, and challenges regarding access to the water-based economy of the dam.
To encourage public participation, members of the public are invited to attend a public participation process on Thursday, 4 June, at Magalies Park. Information will be shared to enable all interested and affected parties to participate in the review of the existing RMP, which was approved in 2017.
In the meantime, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has extended Magalies Water’s appointment as implementing agent for the remediation project by a further nine months.
Magalies Water was initially appointed as the implementing agent for water resource planning and management in the upper reaches of the Crocodile West River Catchment and Hartbeespoort Dam from April 2023 to March 2026.
Interested parties are invited to attend the public participation meeting on 4 June at Magalies Park’s Kingfisher Hall. Sessions will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 and again from 13:00 to 14:00.
