According to Arthur Crewe of SRU High Risk Security, a motorist and witness alerted the security company at around 09:30 about a grey Volkswagen Polo without number plates whose occupants were allegedly shooting at people near Skeerpoort Primary School. More reports followed shortly afterwards.
“We posted a lookout for the vehicle and SRU spotted it on the R512 heading towards Pretoria,” Crewe said.
Back-up was requested and a high-speed chase ensued.
“A Bidvest helicopter that was already in the air joined the chase, as well as SDS Security. The suspects’ vehicle was forced to stop near the N4.”
Four men were apprehended, and a firearm and spent cartridges were found inside the vehicle.
“The driver admitted to the shootings,” Crewe said.
Hartbeespoort police responded to the scene and the suspects were handed over to police officers.
“SRU went back to the scene of the shootings but could not trace the victims, who had fled. According to eyewitnesses, the armed men reportedly robbed and shot at pedestrians randomly,” he said.
Despite the arrests made at the scene, police said no suspects had been arrested and that no one was shot.
“Hartbeespoort police appeal to the public to contact the investigating officer, Captain Othusitse Kgoroeyaboco, at 076 510 8443 if they have any information regarding the incident,” said police spokesperson Captain Majang Skalkie.
