According to police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake, Brits and Mothutlung police seized pistols, a semi-automatic rifle, shotgun and various rounds of ammunition from a man in the Mothutlung area near Brits.
She said the operation ensued after police received information about individuals terrorising communities in and around the area. The suspects were suspected to be in possession of illegal firearms.
“The investigation led police to Mothotlung, where a suspect was located driving a bakkie. The vehicle was stopped and searched, resulting in the discovery of a 9mm pistol and 15 rounds of live ammunition. The suspect could not produce a valid licence for the firearm and was immediately arrested,” she said.
The arrest led police to the suspect’s residence, where more pistols, a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and various rounds of ammunition were found.
“Police are conducting further investigations to establish the ownership of the firearms and ammunition and to determine whether they may be linked to other criminal activities.”
The 59-year-old suspect is facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. He remains in police custody and is expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arthur Adams, commended the members involved in the operation. He urged the public to continue providing information to the police to rid communities of illegal firearms.
