Kebra, a K9 member of the Afrique du Sud K9 Security team, found the suspect hiding in bushes near the crime scene, resulting in his arrest.
The suspect stole a bakkie from Generaal Hendrik Schoeman Primary School in Schoemansville around 16:30 on Monday afternoon. Members of the community saw the theft and pursued the thief.
Unbeknownst to the thief, the vehicle had an anti-theft device installed which stalls the engine within a certain distance. The vehicle came to a standstill near a bushy area in Marais Street, and the thief fled into the bushes.
An Afrique du Sud K9 Security officer responded to the scene with his K9 partner, Kebra.
“The thief had fled into the bushy area and we went in pursuit. The vegetation was dense and about 10 minutes into the search, Kebra found the suspect hiding under chopped-down tree branches,” the officer said.
The suspect was arrested and handed over to the Hartbeespoort police.
Kebra, a three-year-old Dutch Shepherd, has contributed to many arrests during her career as a K9 member of ADS K9. “This is the fourth ‘arrest’ she has made on her own.”
