R100 000 reward after R1 million artwork theft at Hartbeespoort shopping centre

Valuable sculptures and paintings worth over R1 million were stolen from De Handelspost Shopping Centre on Sunday morning. A R100 000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the identification of the vehicle and the thieves involved.

In a brazen robbery, three suspects wearing overalls with reflective strips entered the shopping centre in a van without registration plates shortly after the gates opened at 06:00. They broke the glass of a room displaying artwork by well-known artists Marke Meyer and Roberto Vaccaro.

Surveillance footage captured the suspects loading the artwork into the van and driving off.

According to De Handelspost owner Werner Wenhold, the robbery took place during the shift change of security guards, while only coffee shop personnel were at the centre.

“Although an alarm is installed, we don’t know if the alarm went off when they broke open the room,” he said.

Wenhold is offering the R100 000 reward in an attempt to identify the thieves and recover the artwork.

“It is a big loss,” he said.
