According to police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake, the woman was arrested on Thursday, 8 October, after police received a complaint that she had left her children, a 10-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl, without adult supervision for approximately three weeks.
She was taken to the Assen police station. “The woman was in good health when she arrived at the station. However, a while later she began experiencing labour pains.”
Constables Keamogetse Mokhutshoane and Lorraine Olivier came to the rescue and, with the help of an 80-year-old community member, Marijke Van der Walt, helped the woman deliver a healthy baby girl.
An ambulance arrived a short while later and transported the mother and child to a medical facility.
“The circumstances surrounding the allegations are being investigated by police,” Morake said.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Peter Adams commended the members for their swift response, professionalism and compassion in assisting the woman during a critical moment.
