Vehicle thefts in Hartbeespoort escalate

Vehicle thefts in Hartbeespoort have increased alarmingly over the past few months, with police suspecting that a vehicle theft syndicate is operating in the area.

An average of three vehicles per week have been stolen in Hartbeespoort over the past month.

“So far, a total of 12 vehicles have been stolen during October. Thieves mostly target all models of Toyota vehicles,” said police spokesperson Constable Ben Moabi.

“The police are concerned about the increase in vehicle thefts. It seems a vehicle theft syndicate is behind the thefts, and we would like to warn people to be alert.”

Moabi said most thefts have taken place at schools, churches and shopping centres.

“Thieves target these locations because they know people will not return to their vehicles in a short time.”

According to Moabi, police have previously arrested suspected members of the syndicate, but they were released by the courts. “However, we are continuing our investigations to find the culprits.”

Police are urging motorists to remain vigilant, equip their vehicles with appropriate anti-theft devices and avoid parking in isolated areas. They are also advised to preferably park where security is available.
