Approximately 13.5km of asbestos water pipes in Meerhof, Melodie, Ifafi, Schoemansville and Kosmos will be replaced over the next eight months.
“The replacement of the ageing asbestos pipeline distribution network forms part of the municipality’s efforts to improve the reliability, safety and sustainability of water supply infrastructure in the Hartbeespoort area,” said Madibeng spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala.
Madibeng Municipality has appointed five contractors who will work simultaneously in the five areas. Project sites have already been established.
The project will involve replacing the existing asbestos pipelines with UPVC pipes of various sizes, including 250mm, 110mm and 90mm pipelines, depending on the requirements of each area.
“This is the first phase of the Hartbeespoort asbestos pipeline replacement project and will not cover the entire existing asbestos pipeline distribution network. The outstanding sections of the network will be replaced during the second phase, subject to the necessary planning and implementation processes,” Tshabalala said.
Residents are warned that during the construction and connection of the new UPVC pipelines, there may be temporary water supply interruptions, reduced water pressure or other operational disruptions in the affected areas.
“Madibeng Local Municipality will ensure that the affected communities are notified in advance of any planned water interruptions. The municipality will communicate the affected areas, dates and expected duration of the water interruptions.
“Where necessary, alternative water supply arrangements will be implemented,” he said.
Madibeng ward councillor, Martiza du Plessis, said the DA welcomes the commencement of the long-overdue replacement of ageing asbestos water pipelines.
“Residents have been enduring repeated pipe bursts, water interruptions and deteriorating infrastructure for far too long. Replacing these ageing pipelines is an important investment in Hartbeespoort’s water network, and we want this project to succeed,” she said.
“However, residents need clear timelines, proper communication and a plan to minimise disruption during construction. We will continue engaging with Madibeng Local Municipality and the project team, monitor progress across all affected areas and keep residents informed.”
